Selecting the Right Shade of White for Your Home
Many people choosing window treatments want to go with a safe, timeless look. Choosing white window blinds or shades will do just that. It’s never a good idea to match your windows to your wall color. Should you decide to repaint down the road, you’ll have to purchase new drapes or blinds to match. It’s best to match your windows to the white trim than the vibrantly colored walls. Anyone familiar with paint colors knows there is no single shade of white. When you view a white sample on its own, it will appear completely white, but hold it alongside other whites, and you’ll see distinct differences. The differences are even more apparent when you lay different shades on a sheet of white paper. You can choose the best white for you by selecting a prevalent color in your room that you want to highlight, then selecting a white with that color undertone.
Cool tones in decor, such as greens, blues, and greys, need a white with cool undertones. Warm undertones will make your white shades look yellowed and aged even when you’ve just hung them. On the same note, warm colors, including reds, browns, and oranges, need a white with warm undertones, or your room will look uninviting and clinical. If you’re still unsure, we have some tips that will make selecting a white shade a foolproof process.
Samples are a crucial part of choosing the right shade of any color. Seeing color in person and with your home’s decor is the easiest way to get a good match the first time. If you go from memory or bring photos, you may select a shade that’s close but not ideal in a showroom. We suggest using several samples of the product you’re purchasing to ensure a perfect match.
Place your samples near the window being covered and see which undertones you notice first. Choose the shade of white that looks most neutral in your room’s overall decor. Leave the samples in place for a few days to become truly familiar with the shades. Be sure to look at the shades at different times of day to see how varying levels of natural light affect the color. If you simply can’t decide, go with the white that most closely matches the trim in your room. One final tip: don’t go too yellow in a cooler color scheme. Choosing a yellow-based or off-white will give your blinds or shades a consistently dirty look. Nobody wants to clean their window coverings and have them still appear unclean.
